Wen-hao Tien: Weed Out
September 22 – October 19, 2017 in the Holzwasser GalleryWhat is a weed? If someone wants it, is it still a weed? This exhibition contemplates the idea of “wanted and unwanted” through an investigation of weeds in an urban environment. NAC faculty and enthusiastic urban gardener, Wen-hao Tien, has spent countless hours looking for the traces of wilderness in the city; weeds breaking through the sidewalks and manicured gardens of her community – the surprising gifts of nature. Tien delves into our conceptions of “native”, “hybridized”, and “invasive”, in both visual and linguistic explorations of our treatment of plants. Through her photographs, drawings, prints, and cultivated curation of weeds, we begin to see the beauty that is in the eye of the beholder.
