Good Friday Tenebrae Service
March 30 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
The hauntingly beautiful Lamentations of Jeremiah by Jan Dismas Zelenka, heard in an unlit sanctuary. In addition Newton Baroque will perform heart wrenching instrumental music for oboe, violin and bassoon, and several choral offerings written for Good Friday by Zelenka and Gottfried August Homilius. Andrus Madsen conducts.
The service is a reproduction of the ancient Tenebrae ritual where during the course of the service 15 candles are extinguished one by one, concluding with the extinguishing of the Christ candle symbolic of the death of Jesus.
