SUMMARY:Impressions
DESCRIPTION:What’s this program about? \nImpressions features pieces that can be connected to a style of art that either influenced the piece directly or was heavily prominent in the region where it was created at the time it was written. Caroline Shaw talks about how she was inspired to write this piece after listening to the different “colors” of a Haydn quartet and her mission to take that idea even further into the technicolor. Rini aims to call attention to the importance of traditional art and its influence on how we live. There is an easy connection that can be made between her piece and the Javanese batik style. Ravel rejected the idea of being an impressionist but so did the painters of his time. At the end of the day\, it is clear to see how music and visual arts influenced each other. \nThe Music \nCaroline Shaw (USA) – Entr’act \nPeni Candra Rini (Indonesia) – Maduswara \nMaurice Ravel (France) – String Quartet in F Major \nCome Ready to \nMake connections between visual art and music\, explore different styles and traditions\, and create your own masterpiece. \nMusicians \nPeter Paetkau – Violin\, Thompson Wang – Violin\, Maureen Sheehan – Viola\, Nicholas Johnson – Cello \n*Concert will last approx. 1 hour

SUMMARY:Summer Theater Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Scandinavian Cultural Center & Library is excited to be hosting a theater workshop this summer! This is a new program from the SCC&L as a part of our mission to bring the best of the Nordic arts to all. We are excited to showcase a work that is a part of Norwegian culture and bring it to a wider audience. \nThe program will run from July 13th – 31st for kids ages 8-12 who are interested in acting and theater production. We will be producing an adaptation of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Peer Gynt. The workshop will meet every weekday from 9am to 4pm and we will cast the play\, build the sets\, develop acting skills\, design the costumes\, and rehearse our lines to ready for the performance on July 31st for family and friends. \nThe workshop is more focused on the process and enjoyment of producing a show than it is on perfecting the final product. Our goal is for students to feel ownership of the production\, and that there is no limit to their creativity. The role of staff is to encourage students and help them figure out how to bring their ideas to life\, while also teaching from their own experience and shaping a safe and comfortable atmosphere. Days will consist of games and activities\, rehearsals\, work on sets/costumes/props\, lessons about theater and the play\, and lunch/snacks/free time outside. \nVisit our website to learn more\, including dates & rates\, a sample day’s schedule\, and a link to the application form!
