SUMMARY:Democracy\, If We Can Keep It
DESCRIPTION:The Beacon is bringing Danielle Allen–noted Harvard professor and public policy expert–to Newton in anticipation of the 2026 midterm elections. In dialogue with student journalists from the two Newton high schools and Newton Beacon reporters\, Professor Allen will discuss concrete ways each of us–individually and collectively–can strengthen our democracy for the next 50 years. \nDemocracy is almost as hot a topic as AI. Prof. Allen will speak at the Allen Center in West Newton\, tickets are $40. There’ll be time for audience questions\, refreshments\, and socializing after her presentation. \nAbout Danielle Allen\nJames Bryant Conant\, University Professor\, Harvard University\nDirector\, Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation\, Harvard Kennedy School\nDirector\, Democratic Knowledge Project-Learn\, Harvard Graduate School of Education \nDanielle Allen is a political philosopher whose current research focuses on democracy renovation: how to reconnect citizens to civic power through education and institutional redesign\, how to make political institutions more responsive\, accountable\, and participatory\, and how to make public policy that supports democracy. \nHer most recent book\, Justice by Means of Democracy (University of Chicago Press\, 2023)\, provides the theoretical foundation for this work. Her forthcoming book\, The Radical Duke\, a biography of an 18th-century British political reformer\, is due out with Liveright/Norton in 2026. \nThrough the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation at the Harvard Kennedy School\, she leads applied research on electoral reform\, civic infrastructure\, institutional design\, and democracy-supportive public policy. Through the Democratic Knowledge Project-Learn at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, she develops and scales civic education curricula for preK-12 students and higher education. \nShe is the publisher and founder of The Renovator Substack and a contributing columnist at The Atlantic Magazine. \nDemocracy\, If We Can Keep It\nAmerica at 250 and the November Elections:\nHow to Strengthen Our Democracy for the Next 50 Years \nPlease register at\nhttps://givebutter.com/untitled-campaign-c7ebno

SUMMARY:Support the Power of Black Voters
DESCRIPTION:Force Multiplier presents an informative and inspiring Listening and Learning Together free event. \nThe Supreme Court has decimated the Voting Rights Act. \nHear from two organizations leading the fight to restore the power of Black voters. \nIn Callais SCOTUS dealt the final blow to the Voting Rights Act\, which supported civil rights for more than half a century and produced a more representative democracy. \nIts demise has spurred significant racially-motivated gerrymandering and redistricting. Simultaneously\, the rage provoked by the decision has resulted in a groundswell of African-American turnout in special elections and primaries. Grassroots groups across the country are building on that interest to ensure all citizens can and do vote in November and beyond. \nLaTosha Brown co-founded Black Voters Matter in 2016. She was a co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund and Capacity Building Institute\, raising millions for grassroots organizations in the South and Midwest. She also founded the Southern Black Girls & Women’s Consortium\, a $100 million initiative investing in Black women and girls. \nLauren Groh-Wargo\, Chief Executive Officer of Fair Fight and longtime colleague/advisor to Stacey Abrams\, helped build one of the nation’s most influential organizations to protect voting\, expand civic participation\, and challenge voter suppression. \nREGISTER \nForce Multiplier\, an independent\, all-volunteer organization\, can help you maximize the impact of your political investments of time and money by doing the research so you don’t have to. \nFor more information\, forcemultiplierus.org

SUMMARY:Newton’s Housing Rules Aren’t Working
DESCRIPTION:Why does building a home in Newton often require years of special permits\, committee hearings\, and appeals? And why does this exhaustive process mean that Newton ends up with so many expensive McMansions instead of the diverse housing options our community needs?\n\nThe answer lies in both the zoning regulations and the permitting process itself. Over time\, Newton’s complex rules were designed to give neighbors and City Councilors a voice in planning and design decisions. But together\, they have created a system so lengthy\, uncertain\, and costly that builders often pursue the largest and most expensive projects simply to make them financially viable. The process\, along with the zoning\, actively discourages the smaller-scale\, more attainable housing types that many residents say they want.\n\nIn recent years\, Newton has adopted as-of-right zoning for infill sites in village centers\, as well as for smaller “missing middle” and adaptive reuse projects. Important questions remain\, however\, about whether these new rules are succeeding in expanding housing choices while preserving the city’s neighborhoods.\n\nJoin Newton for Everyone for a deep dive into the city’s current permitting pipeline and the new zoning approaches intended to improve it. To help frame the conversation\, urban designers and planners from Utile will discuss their collaboration with Newton’s planning staff on recent zoning reforms\, as well as the innovative zoning initiatives they are leading in the Boston area and across New England.\nEvent Type: Hybrid (In-Person & Virtual Option)\nA virtual link will be communicated before the event.\nREAD MORE AND RSVP

SUMMARY:Stand with Ukraine: Warmth & Solidarity Concert
DESCRIPTION:On the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion\, renowned Ukrainian pianist and composer Vadim Neselovskyi donate his performance to raise emergency winter aid for Kyiv. \nOn Saturday\, February 28 at 5pm the Yamawaki Art and Cultural Center at Lasell University in Newton will host Warmth & Solidarity Concert\, a charity event bringing together artists\, medical professionals\, and volunteers to move emergency aid quickly to civilians in Ukraine. \nEvent details: \nHeld on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion\, the event responds to a worsening humanitarian crisis caused by continued Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during an unusually harsh winter. With subzero temperatures and widespread power outages\, many families in Kyiv are left without heat or electricity. \nThe event will feature Vadim Neselovskyi\, the internationally acclaimed Ukrainian pianist and composer\, who is donating his performance while traveling between concerts in Vienna and New York\, where he will present his new album PERSEVERANTIA. His work has been recognized by NPR\, PBS NewsHour\, The Boston Globe\, and The New York Times. \nDr. Ron Hirshberg (Home Base / Mass General Brigham)\, a participant in the “Invisible Wounds of Ukraine” initiative and the producer of the documentary Standing Up Against the Sky\, will present his film about a ballet dancer who went to the front in the first days of the large-scale aggression against Ukraine. The film features music from the new album PERSEVERANTIA. \nAdmission: Pay-What-You-Can contributions. \nAll proceeds are directed to UkraineRescueFund.org (URF) for immediate winter relief in Kyiv\, where URF volunteers purchase and deliver portable batteries\, blankets\, warm clothes\, hand and toe warmers\, and over-the-counter medications to those in need. \nWhy this matters:\nWinter in Ukraine is life-threatening for elderly people\, children\, hospital patients\, and displaced families when heating and power fail. This campaign provides immediate\, accountable support to restore warmth\, power\, and dignity to affected communities. \nQuote:\n“On this day of remembrance\, music can be both solace and action. We come together to keep families warm and to show that solidarity endures\,” said Vadim Neselovskyi. \nCall to action:\nCan’t attend? Donate at:\nhttps://givebutter.com/WarmthForUkraine

SUMMARY:Fair Housing Listening Session with State Secretary Augustus
DESCRIPTION:Join Secretary Ed Augustus of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC)\, our City of Newton housing team and me\, and the Metro West Collaborative team at the state’s first Fair Housing Regional Listening Session next Thursday afternoon\, Nov. 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Newton City Hall in the 2nd floor War Memorial. \nThis first of a series of listening sessions throughout the state is for residents\, advocates\, and stakeholders to identify barriers to fair housing\, share experiences\, and help shape strategies to ensure that housing in every community in the Commonwealth is inclusive and equitable. \nOne of the critical components of the Massachusetts Affordable Homes Act is the establishment of the state’s first Office of Fair Housing and the Fair Housing Trust Fund to expand efforts to provide access to housing.  This includes working to overcome patterns of segregation in housing and to support better access to housing and affordability. \nAnother goal of these listening sessions is to build public awareness of fair housing rights and responsibilities. By documenting lived experiences\, identifying barriers\, and generating actionable recommendations\, the Commonwealth hopes to be better positioned to proactively address fair housing and ensure that all residents have access to housing opportunities free from housing discrimination. \nRegister today and join us next Thursday. (Please note\, we expect a large turnout and space is limited so registering is helpful but not required.)

SUMMARY:Priced Out: The Growing Challenge of Teacher Retention and Housing Costs
DESCRIPTION:Dramatic changes in the housing market have left many educators in an unwinnable race for one of our most basic needs: an affordable place to live. Many of our teachers have a long commute because they can’t afford housing in Newton or nearby. How does the lack of affordable housing impact retention and recruitment of good teachers? \nThe National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) recently released analysis of teacher pay and housing costs across the country. NCTQ President Heather Peske will share the results of the research and the implications for Newton’s teachers and community. \nIn 2022\, Dr. Peske was named NCTQ’s next President. She comes to NCTQ from her role as Senior Associate Commissioner for Instructional Support in the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MA DESE) where she implemented policies and programs across teacher development\, educator preparation\, and curriculum and instruction. Dr. Peske earned her master’s degree and doctorate in Administration\, Planning\, and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She started her career in education as a 4th grade teacher. \nHybrid event: Scandinavian Living Center\, Nordic Hall\n206 Waltham Street\, Newton & live streaming on Zoom\nREGISTER IN PERSON \nREGISTER FOR ZOOM

SUMMARY:Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:“How to deal with exhaustion and burnout standing up to authoritarian government” \nEveryone is invited to our monthly First UU Society free lunch at noon\n1326 Washington Street\, West Newton. \nRev. Jo Murphy\, Executive Director of the UU Mass Action organization\, will speak about justice work.  She will discuss how working for justice under authoritarian rule can be profoundly taxing\, leading to exhaustion.  We all need ways to maintain our spirits and energy as we work to protect democracy. \nAll of us who work for justice need tools to be effective and not lose hope.  Taking meaningful actions\, maintaining strong social connections\, and engaging in creative expression are just a few of the steps that can support us as we work together toward a positive goal. \nMore people are looking for ways to protect our nation to be a place for everyone\, one that supports all of us in fulfilling our dreams and sustains the rule of law\, so that each of us is treated fairly.  We need strength to stand up against anyone who would deprive us of those hard-fought protections.  We will discuss how to keep our focus and faith for our long-term\, important goals. \nUU Mass Action provides pathways towards justice and identifies opportunities in which we can live our shared values.  They build relationships with leaders and work to develop their leadership and engage them in statewide campaigns.   These are campaigns on climate and economic justice\, immigrant justice\, housing justice\, youth engagement\, and more.  Every year in April\, they lead all congregational teams to lobby their state representatives and senators about pending legislation that needs sponsorships and support. \nFirst Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) is a congregation with liberal and progressive theology.  Founded in 1848\, for 177 years\, FUUSN has nurtured the spiritualities of its members and helped meet the needs of the Greater Newton community
