SUMMARY:Boston Annex Players: Fate and Folk
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening of symphonic masterpieces featuring Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5 and Dvořák’s uplifting Symphony No. 8. From the gripping four-note opening that changed music history to the warmth and vitality of Dvořák’s Bohemian-inspired melodies\, this program showcases two of the most beloved and enduring works in the orchestral repertoire. The Boston Annex Players bring these masterworks to life as a 15-member sinfonietta: larger than a chamber ensemble\, more intimate than a full orchestra\, and close enough that you’ll feel every note. Presented by Cherry Street Music at The Allen Center.

SUMMARY:Washington Street Update
DESCRIPTION:We all want a Washington Street that is safe and accessible\, functions well\, and is attractive for the neighborhoods it connects. And we know that getting this right requires listening to the residents who live in this area\, our city employees who must traverse and maintain our roadways as part of their jobs\, the drivers\, bicyclists\, and pedestrians who frequent this busy corridor\, and the businesspeople and restauranteurs who work there. \nWe’ve already heard from many of you\, and we’re taking that feedback seriously as we begin to consider what changes to the pilot may be needed. \nOpportunities to Engage \nJoin us on Wednesday\, Oct. 28\, at 6 p.m. at the Cooper Center\, in person or on Zoom\, for a community meeting where we’ll introduce some conceptional designs of potential changes to the Washington Street Pilot. We will record this meeting and make it available on the Washington Street Pilot Project page following the meeting. \nIn addition to the community meeting on October 28th\, we’re holding three drop-in office hour Washington Street Pilot Listening Sessions this fall: \nSession 1: \n\nWhen: Friday\, November 6 — 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.\nWhere: City Hall\, Room 204\n\nSession 2: \n\nWhen: Thursday\, November 12 — 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nWhere: Zoom\n\nSession 3: \n\nWhen: Wednesday\, November 18 — 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nWhere: City Hall\, Room 204\n\nAdditionally are always grateful for comments\, questions\, and feedback at WashingtonStreet@newtonma.gov.

SUMMARY:J-Dag
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Christmas like a Dane! Or rather\, celebrate the arrival of Christmas beer like a Dane! \nThe first Friday of November is known in Denmark as J-Dag\, short for julebryg dag\, meaning “Christmas beer day.” J-Dag started in the 1980s when Tuborg Brewery began releasing their extremely popular Julebryg and has become a beloved tradition. Tuborg salesmen drive around Denmark handing out beers to crowds decked out in blue Santa hats (to match the bottle’s blue packaging). \nWhile Tuborg’s Julebryg isn’t available in the U.S.\, we have plenty of craft breweries that release seasonal brews! In the spirit of the holiday\, we invite you to try them with us. We’ll celebrate J-Dag in our Nordic Hall with Danish snacks\, blue Santa hats\, music\, and a selection of winter beers. \nTicket includes a “mini flight” so you can sample our selection\, a Santa hat\, and snacks. Once you’ve tasted your mini flight\, you can head back to the bar to purchase your favorite(s) in full size. \nFriday\, November 6th | 6 – 8pm | 21+ | $25 | tickets

As the rise of far-right politics and war bring back harrowing memories of their youth\, the four friends have different ways of reckoning their past with the present. This thoughtful and moving documentary provides a meaningful perspective on today’s global climate through the eyes of holocaust survivors. \nEnglish and Swedish with English subtitles | runtime 82 minutes | 2025 \nSaturday\, November 7th | 12pm | $10\, $5 for members \n*Free admission for anyone who qualifies for WIC\, EBT\, or ConnectorCare. SUMMARY:Screening: The Love That Remains
DESCRIPTION:The Love That Remains (original Icelandic title: Ástin sem eftir er) is a story of an Icelandic family in which the parents are separating. Anna\, an artist\, and Magnus\, a fisherman\, share three children and live in Iceland’s stunning countryside. With wit and depth\, auteur Hlynur Pálmason explores a year in the family’s life through a series of vignettes. The film is beautifully shot on 35mm film and features bursts of surrealism. Join us for this visually and emotionally radiant study of a family. \nSaturday\, November 14th | 1pm | $10\, $5 for members \nEBT\, WIC\, and ConnectorCare cardholders receive free admission. To reserve free tickets\, email caroline@scandicenter.org \nIcelandic with English subtitles. 109 min

SUMMARY:Commemorate and Remember
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a lifelong lover of classical music or attending your first choral concert\, Commemorate and Remember offers an unforgettable musical journey.\nMaurice Duruflé’s Requiem is music of extraordinary beauty and consolation. Rooted in Gregorian chant and enriched by luminous French harmonies\, it moves from quiet prayer through moments of intensity to the radiant serenity of In Paradisum. Duruflé transforms themes of loss and remembrance into a vision of peace and eternal light.\nTarik O’Regan’s Triptych provides a vibrant contemporary counterpart. Drawing on texts from diverse faith traditions\, O’Regan explores death\, connection\, nature\, and community through music ranging from rhythmic energy to contemplative stillness.\nThe concert also features the world premiere of a new work by emerging composer and chorus member Charlotte Koonce\, offering the rare experience of hearing a piece performed publicly for the very first time.\nTogether\, these works create a moving journey toward connection\, transcendence\, and peace.
